We all have them don’t we? Books that are started with the best of intentions only to be given up on for one reason or another before they are finished. Books that languish on the bedside table, or ones you try valiantly to read, again and again and again but never actually finish. Books I feel I should read, because they are apparently so profound/important/fantastic, but leave me feeling too disappointed or frustrated to continue. And finally, books that are just too awful to waste your time on, you know, the one’s that are just so bad you don’t even want to donate them to charity and inflict them on anyone else…even for 50p!
It used to frustrate me that I didn’t finish books, I would put them to one side, determined to try again some sunny day and wait for my annoyance to subside. But then I realised there was nothing wrong with not finishing books, I wouldn’t finish a meal I didn’t enjoy or wear an outfit I didn’t feel comfortable in. So, guilt free I cast those tiresome tomes aside and moved on with my life, because honestly there’s so much more to be annoyed about than not finishing a book!
With this in mind I thought I’d start a little series called…you guessed it, “Books I Didn’t Finish” and because there are so many of them, I decided to categorise them in the following ways:
- Too Complicated
- Too Dull
- Too Scary (I am the biggest wimp)
- Too Frustrating
- Too Badly Written
This list will continue to expand as I discover more books that I just can’t finish, but for now and starting tomorrow I will begin with ones that have already earned a place in my book graveyard!
